English

Soil erosion is one of the most important environmental challenges in mountainous and developing regions, where it is intensified by both natural and anthropogenic factors. This study aimed to investigate changes in soil erosion risk severity within the Yasuj urban area from 1992 to 2025 using the SL 190-2007 standard and remote sensing data within a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. Slope angle, land use, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and Vegetation Fractional Cover (VFC) were used to generate soil erosion risk maps. The results showed that the proportion of the study area classified as having severe, very severe, and extremely severe erosion risk increased from 36% to 62% over the study period. This increase was primarily associated with the decline in natural vegetation cover and the expansion of agricultural land and residential areas, particularly on sloping terrain. These findings highlight the need for improved land-use management, vegetation conservation and restoration, and the implementation of watershed management measures to reduce soil erosion risk and promote sustainable development in the Yasuj urban area.
